Mastering Image Sizes on Facebook and Instagram

Date: 24/05/2023

When posting images on any social media platform, using the correct image size for each specific platform is essential for creating visually appealing and professional-looking content that engages and resonates with your audience.

Instagram

It was previously thought that the correct image size for instagram was square (1080 x 1080 px), as that is how the image appears on your Instagram grid. However, it has recently been suggested that images that are portrait (864 x 1080 px) are encouraged, as they take up more screen space for anyone scrolling through their newsfeed and are therefore more likely to stand out.

Here is the difference between how a square image looks on your newsfeed compared to a portrait image:

It is important to use the correct image size when posting on Instagram to ensure your aesthetic and brand remains consistent. If you are someone who carefully curates your Instagram profile to be visually appealing to anyone who may visit it, images that are not properly sized can disrupt this.

Although we suggest using portrait images when posting on Instagram, images on your grid will still show as square. This means that parts of any portrait image that you post will be cut off slightly when showing on your grid, which is why it’s important to plan your image well to ensure that it doesn’t look out of place and important parts aren’t cut off.

Images that are visually appealing and fit well within the platform’s designated dimensions are more likely to capture the attention of users as they scroll through their feeds. High-quality, properly sized images are more likely to receive likes, comments, and shares, and can ultimately help you grow your Instagram following and increase your engagement rate.

Facebook

As with Instagram, images are a critical component of Facebook content, and using the right image size is crucial for maximising their impact and effectiveness.

When posting on Facebook, we suggest using an image size of (1080 x 1080 px). This will ensure that your images are displayed properly without being cropped, pixelated, or distorted.

However, Facebook has specific guidelines for image dimensions, which vary depending on the type of content you are sharing, such as profile pictures (360 x 360 px), cover photos (820 x 312 px) and ads (vary depending on ad placements). If you upload an image that doesn’t conform to Facebook’s image guidelines, Facebook may automatically resize or compress the image for you, possibly resulting in a loss of image quality and visual appeal.

Therefore using the correct image size on Facebook is essential for creating visually appealing and professional-looking content that engages and resonates with your audience.
